As a record store owner was telling us some while ago, in cheap synthesizers landed on the market, sounding as cheap as their price, eveybody started using them, so music stopped being that interesting globally.

Which doesn't mean there ain't no gem to find digging the crates, only that the digging has to go deeper than before! And that's how this mix was prepared, through hours of checking releases fromhoping to find interesting, rare grooves from that year, which were covers of other songs… Well we found a private pressing more than inspired by Stevie Wondersoulful, funky or tropical covers of Weldon IrvineRick JamesCaptain BeefheartSly StoneAl GreenLed Zeppelin or David Bowieand an early Danny Elfman take on Cab Calloway which will inspire him to re-do it for the "Nightmare Before Christmas" soundtrack as the "Oingo Bongo song".

Digging into this decade is a different kind of fun than the 60s or the 70s, and we think we managed to find some very exciting numbers.

While every kind of shitty media only spotlights music that is sold, distributed, promoted, subsidized, etc. If some music doesn't need to be sold, sometimes it's because it can't be sold, sometimes it's because it's just too good to be sold and shared with the whole world!

But I digress. In The Grateful Dead revolutionized the music biz with their approach to free music. In the s if you thought nothing happened, you just missed all the free music that followedfrom a whole generation of bands. Free music is quite something and every two months roughly, I go, hunt, dig and pick some of the finest free music that's out there, and build a short story with it. Isn't it? My first pick is the single extracted from Dokkerman and The Turkeying Fellaz 's new album out on Tramp Records this month.

Gritty deep funk from Budapest, Hungary, this is heavy shit from a badass nine piece band! I've stayed on the same spirit with Breakdown Brassa masterful brass band from Brooklyn, NY, who've just released an essential Afro-funky 7 inch on Kept Recordswhich they also share for free in digital form on their bandcamp page.

You're gonna love those cats They have a dub tune in the latest 'Bust Free' compilation from Cold Busted that I couldn't do without here.

Doctor Stereo from Buenos Aires, Argentina, is not that much of a collaborator of this little Paris DJs label, but he's been appearing in those pages quite repeatedly anyway. The man's got a knack for digging into the groovy obscure and he's often very on point.

Picking a tune out of it wasn't an easy treat since the album has really been conceived as a whole story but I did my best. We invited them for a mix of Italian soundtracks, did an interview with them and featured the band quite prominently in these pages. To celebrate their current Euro tour, they've released a free mashup version of The Beastie Boys ' 'Sabotage' hit.

Psych rock meets hip hop at its finest, it's just huge, don't pass on this one! Their rework of s Nigerian singer Mad Man Jaga builds a bridge between modern electronics and old school afrobeat. A heavy dancefloor tune for sure. Also from Paris, French producer with roots in Chile Orlando Diaz Corvalanbetter known as Medlineis present with an hybridation of latin and Kenyan music. A Paris DJs mix or compilation is always better with a track produced by Adrian Quesada in Austin, Texas, and this one isn't an exception.

The 'Brownout presents Brown Sabbath' album released last year on Ubiquity is such a marvel of latin psych funk rock that I'm very enthousiastic about finding another free extract from this LP. You're gonna trip yourself out on this one that recalls the famous 'Maggot Brain' from Funkadelic.

You should get that album if you haven't already He puts out frenetically some LP) albums and EPS that generate millions of downloads and consequentely fills a crazy booking schedule. Closing this selection is a track from by a band from Iceland I had never heard about before: Kaleo. Their blend of indie rock and blues is catchy and groovy, as opposed to other Icelandic bands, rather more focused on chilled electronics or ambient pop I'd love to be able to check the album but I don't think it's been released outside of their homeland.

Thankfully their appearance at the Bonnaroo festival might be a game-changer! The San Francisco psychedelic funk band is on fire on the web these days, with free singles on Bandcamp, live tunes on soundcloud and more… They have a new album coming out soon and it's cool to see them keeping on sharing and caring that much.

Love this band. The Edan one is heavy shit and quite respectful of the psychedelic hip hop master previous works. Damn cool and a free download just like all the other tunes in this mix!! This one's never gets old. And we'll be back with a new eclectic selection of free tunes in a month or two, of course!

Real J Wallace vs. Monophonics - My Heart Cries feat. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band' and of course many other great records. With acid, musicians experienced what it took Tibetan monks 20 years to obtain, opening the doors of perception in 20 minutes. On the covers front, though, things just slowly started to venture into psychedelic waters, as you'll hear in this selection.

Opener is another surprising version of the 'Fever' classic. There's so many it's always very cool to stumble upon a very original one. Here's a Mike Bloomfield -ish version by US band The New Apocalypsewith nice horns, loud drums, clean bass, pulsating organ, breaks and a cool "funk-rock" appeal.

We then go into the huge Bobby Hebb 'Sunny'and a previously unissued version from The Temptations ' singer Dennis edwardsreleased last year through Ace Records. Their album is the shit, great tune after great tune, don't hesitate to go diggin' for this one. A King Curtis original, 'Memphis soul Stew'is presented here in a totally different version, recorded live a few years later with a stellar crew of musicians.

Because we like tweaking with our own concepts a bit… and felt the irresistible live version is superior than the original, despite what The Guardian says see here. Brighton's finest Tru Thoughts is one of those and it's already been going on for 15 years now… Reason enough for Paris DJs to celebrate the label's 15th anniversary, by inviting four of their artists to do an exclusive mix, starting with UK Sound System Culture sensation Ghost Writerz. Paris DJs is, obviously, based in Paris, and we don't have any other media about groovy music over here in France so it's hard to find out about new bands. This mix sets things right. After so many 'Molesting Laura mixes and a blast of a dozen new mixes of covers at then end ofwe couldn't just stop there. Mixes of cover songs are cool by essence, since they're mostly made of familar tunes, but we thought of a twist: let's sort them out by year.
