Their 1st cd Re-released with some demos off of *Southern Discomfort I don't really care if some people say they sound too much like the Melvins or other bands on Suffering, because to me the whole album sounds /5(19). The main thing you see on this is three more tracks - "Depress", "Peace Thru War alt. Album) are morsels added onto a already satisfying steak. My only complaint with this set is that with the restyling of the album art, the old photo under the CD tray is gone. That was a nice vintage bondage shot. Play it in your car, and by the third track you'll be screaming into your windshield and running over children. Ah, what fun Loud, angry crunchy sludge straight from New Orleans. Amazing album, and the re-mastered version has extra jams on it that are just a little bit harder, especially Dopesick Jam my personal favorite.
You must own it. Glad to not only have seen these guys live in St. Louis years ago, but to have them in my CD player as well. So much heavy grooves written for this album will be another cause for never letting Depress - Eye Hate God* - In The Name Of Suffering (CD album leave the CD player.
One person found this helpful. Inmetal, alternative, and nu-metal were all huge. Despite all this, EyeHateGod had no chance of commercial appeal. The New Orleans sludge metal quintet were just about as misanthropic, nihilistic, and flat out depressing as one could get. For a mainstream who thought Korn sounded as if they were going through a lot of pain, EyeHateGod would no doubt send them into an emotional turmoil.
The guitar work and riffing were always stretched out to the point of no return, almost like Black Flag played at a tenth the speed. The bass droned ad infinite, making the listener stuck in the group's living hell. The drummer is always in the background, but aware of the right speeds for every song.
The vocal work by Michael D. Williams is one of the most easily distinctive in all of metal. Metal is a genre known for often indecipherable vocals, but Williams are possibly the most unintelligible out of them all. Seriously, it sounds as if the man is speaking in his own painful language most of the time. It's certainly the most well recorded, as many of their earlier records are hampered by poor sound quality.
As for the songs themselves, they're what one can expect from the group, with occasionally a catchy riff surfacing here and there particularly the Sabbath-like "Dixie Whiskey". Ultimately, this is the kind of metal record which separates the men from the boys.
Mall core poseurs wearing Mudvayne and Disturbed tee-shirts will be left terrified at the recording. However, those with a taste for the more extreme sides of American metal or even old school hardcore really need to own this. Its one of the best metal albums of the 90s.
Others may prefer "Take As Needed For Pain", but "Dopesick" is an avant-garde catchy punk-crust hardcore sickening masterpiece. On this EHG realize the full potential we all face before self destruction.
Everyone is entitled to there opinion but I absolutely hated this cd and listened to it struggled to listen through it maybe twice before I gave it away. I listen to alot of Depress - Eye Hate God* - In The Name Of Suffering (CD stuff and other things too but cmon people.
Makes me a little less proud to be from the same state as these guys. Maybe there other releases are good at least better than this but this doesn't do anything for me on any level. It did not groove, it didn't have any production quality, and vocals and musicianship was not there at all.
Dopesick is an appropriate name cuz these guys and whoever engineered this had to be on something to green light this into production line pressing. Which ironically is known for a low-fi production quality but at least they play there instruments to a better degree of proficiency. See all reviews from the United States. Mike's vocals are as real as it gets. I love the sloppiness of their sound and this record never gets old. Eyehategods b sides and greatest hits rocks!! First, if you have the Eyehategod re-masters, you don't need this CD, as you have all the tracks from it already. Southern Discomfort is comprised of the six bonus tracks from Take as Needed for Pain and the three bonus tracks from Dopesick.
The re-mastered editions came out after Southern Discomfort, so at the time, this collection of rarities had some obscure tracks.
Now, if you have EHG's original CD's instead of the re-masters, you'll definitely want to pick this up. Why they weren't chosen for albums I don't know, because all three are great tracks, and classic-sounding EHG. On Depress - Eye Hate God* - In The Name Of Suffering (CD, the band combines sections of multiple songs, awesomely raging through highlights of the songs' respective albums. If you have these tracks on the EHG re-masters, pick up their Preaching the Endtime Message, featuring more unreleased rarities; and if you don't, you'll probably think this is worth having.
Eyehategod are the epitome of raw music, so these kinds of recordings suit their sound perfectly. You can't go wrong with the Sludge-Kings of New Orleans - you can feel the rank, stale dope-sick sweat pushing out from your pores from the opening notes - by the end of track one, you'll be shivering, curled up in the fetal position, and dry-heaving. And if you think this is a negative review, then baby, you'll just never understand.
Buy one on vinyl and one of CD - for a 'Wake-up' - ya dig? I remember recieving this one in the mail, had seen pics of the band in metal mags and hey Surprisingly not surprised by thier sound, more death metal than Crowbar, more punk-fueled than Neurosis, but still grinding that axe hard.
Has a raw touch to the recording, fast songs, slooow songs, all raging fits of depression and anger. Truth hurts and it's too bad the band doesn't shine to hard here A few incredibly good songs, but for the most part takes a backseat to thier others. I love their name and then it comes the music. Over-all,prety darn amazing not a bit dissapointing! I dont like writing alot so i keep it short and just say? Own it! I must say this is one of the best used new cds I have ever bought amazon really came thru for me on a great buy I must say if u think twice bout it dont they r good.

Love it or hate it, "In The Name Of Suffering" is an important album of Sludge Metal and with it EyeHateGod helped pave the way for other Sludge Metal groups such as Iron Monkey, Bongzilla, Noothgrush and a handful of others. While this album is far from being "perfect", it is still a damn good record, one which I often find myself returning to.

With their debut album 'In the Name of Suffering' the band introduced us to the vilest piece of music imaginable without actually getting silly a la brutal death metal/goregrind. There are no lyrics about dismembering children and eating them for breakfast or raping fragile, old women.
