Buying vinyl is risky because now and then you get a record that sounds like it was mastered from a 60kbps mp3 on an ipod. This isn’t that. I don’t know what the original pressing sounded like but this pressing has a depth, separation, and clarity that wasn’t in the CD version or in an import I bought in , which this is a replacement for/5(14). I will buy the CD one day, have the vinyl LP, and every note, word, and sound, is committed to memory. The recital on "Agaen Sea," with that ominous voice, I can't think of a better vehicle for that passage. identified the Album and I was /5().
Actually, I do quite like watching records revolve. It has a kind of calming feeling. Mastered from proper analogue sources at Abbey Road where they're pretty good at doing this type of thing well.
Happy to say they succeed again here. The usual irritation at lack of poly lined sleeves applies again here but it's a minor point and I really can't get excited about it as they're easy enough to buy anyway. Major record labels get a rough time but as far as reissues and catalogue regeneration go, Universal are at the top of the game. Sure, they don't always get it totally right but a look at their recent releases shows they have a solid commitment to vinyl and the ability to do it well.
I'm not convinced at their pricing levels, considering them to be on the high side but in defence, this is a premium product, aimed at a small market with a limited pressing meaning that the price per unit is likely to be considerably higher. Worth paying for? In this case, yes. Used original copies of this album are hard to come by in decent condition and do command a high price. Being on the Vertigo label makes the collectibility higher and prices are just plain ridiculous for those who prefer to PLAY our records as opposed to just having them to look at.
I like it. It won't be a massive seller at the price but it is a perfect example of music from a time when artistic ambitions could be fulfilled without having to sell your soul to the corporate beanpushers. Long before Autotune, dynamic compression, Simon Cowell and rap destroyed real music we have something that is worthy of still being talked about over 40 years since it first came out. This is a limited edition red vinyl. It looks excellent. The music is of its time: extended musical athletics that stretch even the most loyal of progressive music appreciation.
Two tracks hold up really well, The Horsemen and the Aegien Sea. I mostly think the albums best are found on the first of the two discs. Side three is way too off the wall and feels like vangelis was doing way too much mind altering experiements.
Overall I love the theme and treatment of the subject. A cult classic. Absolutely fantastic! My music teacher used to play us this back in I think. Wonderful, atmospheric, eery, rocking, inspiring. They've found the system! The musical skills shown here are something rare This album is a total one-off - and brilliant! The musical skills shown here are something rare is there a faster drummer on the planet? And tracks like 'Break' take you by surprise - in a good way.
The inside spread is mainly taken up with an illustration of a car crash. This can be found on Google images. For me one star reduction for plain white dust jackets. This may be as originally issued but why not boost these new reissues with a little more.
The music now. Prog, with a cult following, this is an unusual sound but I really like the album. If I was going to like it to a Yes album then possibly Relayer, only because the music is quiet, loud, a little confusing in places but it works.

The record was damaged when I got it. The record cover was wrinkled. Buying vinyl is risky because now and then you get a record that sounds like it was mastered from a 60kbps mp3 on an Loud. This particular release is magnificently detailed and powerful. Load more international reviews. Fantastic copy of a true Prog classicI have loved this since listening to it years ago and I am so glad to find a gram vinyl to listen to it on.
Fantastic consept album! The lyric is inspired by Abbie Hoffman 's pamphlet Fuck the System. The lyrics introduce the apocalyptic theme by referring to the fall of Babylon the Great from Revelation The song's structure is marked by a dynamic contrast, with Roussos singing over an echoed keyboard drone and wind chimes in the verses, and the chorus containing traditional rock instrumentation highlighted by Sideras' drumming.
One of the best known songs of"The Four Horsemen" influenced Beck 's " Chemtrails ", which has a similar structure, and The Verve 's "The Rolling People", which quoted the "fa fa fa" chant. The narration does not mention the earthquake that the Book of Revelation attributes to the breaking of the sixth seal, but is otherwise faithful to the biblical description.
Forst's line, "And when the lamb opened the seventh seal, silence covered the sky" was sampled in the Enigma song, " The Rivers of Belief ". Side two begins with "Aegian Sea", an instrumental featuring another lengthy guitar solo by Koulouris, elaborate keyboard work by Vangelis, and wordless vocalising. Forst's narration is slowed down in pitch and panned to the right stereo channel, with echo being heard on the left channel.
Vangelis provides additional backing vocals, which reflect his interest in Byzantine music. The song features a funk-influenced rhythm and studio experimentation, with the first snare hit of the verses having plate reverb applied to it. During recording, Vangelis LP a microphone in order to direct the band, and the final mix of the song includes some of his rhythmic scat singing and studio commentary.
He says Pame! The last song on the second side, "Ofis", is a brief interlude in which Yiannis Tsarouchis recites a line from the shadow puppet play Alexander the Great and the Accursed Serpent with slapback echo applied to his voice.
The line, Exelthe ofi katiramene, dhioti an dhen exelthe essy, tha se exelthe ego! Head Heritage interpreted it to represent the moment where the "curtain of reality" is torn down, and thus the real apocalypse and the circus show apocalypse begin to intertwine as per Ferris' concept. The second half of the song introduces additional narration, referring to the imagery of previous songs and describing the sight of the apocalypse as "the pictures of what was, of what is, of what has to come".
The instrumental in turn crossfades into "The Capture of the Beast", a drum solo by Sideras that makes heavy use of toms and percussion instruments, performed over Vangelis' keyboard drones and effects. The songs are linked together by brief spoken lines recited in a halting manner which announce their titles, "That was 'The Wedding of the Lamb'" at the end of the former, and "Now comes 'The Capture of the Beast'" at the beginning of the latter, LP.
Vangelis described the track as conveying "the pain of birth and the joy of intercourse. Vangelis scat sings backing vocals, meant to make fun of the song's dramatic mood. The album's sleeve was created by production coordinator Gerard Album). Ferris stated that Fallec's initial idea was to have a black cover with "" printed in white in the middle, inspired by the white background of The Beatlesand created the original design with three plastic car numbers. Dubre" appears on the imageand that while Fallec was unsure about the relation of the painting to the work apart from the "car" theme of the cover, he and Loud - Aphrodites Child - 666 (Vinyl considered it "the absolute representation of the stupidity of man.
The liner notes state "This album was recorded under the influence of Sahlep. Colin Larkin 's Encyclopedia of Popular Music states that "the album was applauded for its ambition and execution", but it did not attract many contemporary reviews.
Although Ferris has been identified as the lyricist, the album explicitly states that all tracks — even the instrumentals — are composed by Vangelis Papathanassiou and Costas Ferris. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Jul 19, · Like two bucks or something. And I see Downes's record was from '70, so it came first, then the painting was reused for Death Rock. Also, your "cut a line and edited badly" comment made me laugh out loud. Allan, thanks for the extra info, as well as the Creem detail. I'd love to see that one someday. I actually don't have a single issue of Creem!
